What a USDOT number is
A USDOT number is the identifier the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) assigns to a company when it registers. FMCSA uses it to track the company’s registration, inspections, crashes, audits and compliance reviews. The number stays with the company; it does not change when the company updates its information.
Many companies that operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce must have one, and some states require it for carriers that operate only within the state. FMCSA’s registration pages explain who needs a number.
What you will find on a company record
- Status: whether the USDOT number and the operating authority (MC, FF or MX number) are active.
- Insurance: liability, cargo and bond filings on file, the amounts FMCSA requires, and past filings.
- Safety: roadside inspections and crashes in the last 24 months, out-of-service rates and any FMCSA safety rating.
- Out-of-service orders issued by FMCSA, with dates.
- History: when authority was granted, suspended, revoked or reinstated.
- Fleet: power units, drivers, mileage and cargo types the company reported on Form MCS-150.
Where the data comes from
Records come from FMCSA’s public datasets on data.transportation.gov and are refreshed daily. Each page shows the source and date of every section. CheckTrucking is an independent website and is not affiliated with FMCSA or USDOT; FMCSA’s own lookup is the SAFER Company Snapshot.
