What an MC number is
An MC number is the docket number FMCSA assigns when it grants a company operating authority. For-hire carriers that haul regulated freight across state lines and freight brokers generally need operating authority; the docket number identifies that authority. FF numbers are used for freight forwarders and MX numbers for Mexico-based carriers.
A company can have a USDOT number without an MC number, for example a private carrier that moves only its own goods. One USDOT number can also hold more than one docket.
How to search
- Type the prefix and the number, for example MC-794536. Spaces, dashes and leading zeros are ignored.
- A number without a prefix is checked as both a USDOT number and an MC number.
- For brokers, the record shows whether a surety bond (BMC-84) or trust fund (BMC-85) is on file.
Where the data comes from
Authority status comes from the FMCSA Company Census File, refreshed daily. Insurance and bond filings come from FMCSA licensing records; FMCSA moved these to a new system in May 2026, and each page shows which source and date it uses. CheckTrucking is an independent website and is not affiliated with FMCSA or USDOT.
You can also look up a company by USDOT number.
